Morrison's launches heart-shaped steaks for Valentine's Day but not everyone is convinced

If you didn’t manage to get your hands on one of Marks & Spencer’s Love Sausages, fear not because Morrison’s has launched a range of Sweetheart Steaks just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Because, of course, nothing says “I love you” quite like a slab of heart-shaped meat.

Made for sharing between two people, the Sweetheart Steaks are said to be a great option for carnivorous couples celebrating Valentine’s Day from the comfort of their own home.

“This is the perfect Valentine's Day food for customers that are looking to impress”, says Paul Robinson, butchery specialist at Morrisons.

“Before you even cut into it, this steak sends a romantic message and it tastes great too.”

The supermarket says the dish is made using traditional ribeye, which has more marbling than most other steaks, meaning it’s richer and more tender.

Morrison’s will also be using its in-house team of expert butchers to craft each steak into the romantic shape, ensuring they do not waste any of the meat.

As can be expected, many people have reacted to Morrison’s new launch with disbelief.

“Something quite creepy about moulding dead animal parts into shapes for the purpose of love,” one person wrote.

Another added: “First we had love sausage, now a sweetheart steak – when will it stop?”

The launch comes just days after Marks & Spencer announced the arrival of a new product for Valentine’s Day: the ‘Love Sausage’.

A heart-shaped pork sausage wrapped in streaky bacon, the dish became a viral talking point with many shops reportedly selling out in minutes.

The Love Sausage had a similar social media reaction to Morrison's steaks, with many pointing out the sexual connotations of the meaty product.

“Someone in marketing must be very pleased with themselves for managing to sneak this past their boss,” one person tweeted.

“I genuinely thought I was getting promoted tweets from @AnnSummers when I saw this,” another commented.

In response to overwhelming reaction, Marks and Spencer also launched a vegetarian option, putting Heart ‘Beet’ Burgers on its shelves for Valentine’s Day.

Taking to Twitter, the official Marks & Spencer account wrote: “For those you asking about a vegan Love Sausage, let us introduce our Heart-Beet Burger, made with roasted beetroot and sweet onions.

“Pick one up in store now and serve in a fluffy bun for a vegan Valentine's dinner that's sure to get your date's heart-beet racing.”

Morrison’s Sweetheart Steaks will be in-store from 11 February until 16 February, costing £20 per kg.
